A piece of cake

By Liz Mellino 30 November 2016

Sitting pride of place at any wedding reception is the cake. Towering over the dance floor, in front of the bridal table, the wedding cake was traditionally made as a symbol of good luck for the happy couple and their guests.

As their first task as husband and wife, the couple will usually cut their cake upon arrival at the reception to serve with dessert.

Take a look at some cakes made by local suppliers across the Goulburn Valley, and gain inspiration for your next decadent masterpiece.

Beautiful ombre wrapping for Mr & Mrs Barry's wedding cake at The Woolshed. The rustic styling of the wedding carried through into the cake, with a wooden topper, serving board and muted colours adding to the theme.

A uniquely different wedding cake for Mr and Mrs Lee. The front of the cake featured rustic icing, burlap flowers and a wooden topper. While the back was made to look like a red dirt quarry, with dump trucks and tippers adding to the look.

A classic ivory colour palette for the wedding of Karen and Dean at The Olivehouse. Beautiful ivory ruffles, pearls, intricate detail and contrasting roses give the cake dimension and character.

A double layered cake featuring gold and marble for Domenic and Ashlin's engagement celebrations at The Carrington. Black ribbon and a customised topper finished off the look.

A classic white cake with statement purple florals for a recent wedding at Radcliffe's Echuca. A simple but elegant choice for a wedding as the white base can be decorated to suit any theme.

Two naturally rustic cakes for the wedding of Julie and Ross. The cakes were served on a large wooden board with accompanying greenery.

A decadent rose gold delight for the wedding of Liam and Shonae. The first layer featured double chocolate cake with a chocolate macadamia filling, while the second tier was chocolate mud cake with a hazelnut and chocolate filling. Fresh blooms finished off the look.
